Journalists who collaborated with Communist Secret Police hide the truth

The chairwoman of the "Journalists against Corruption" Association in Sofia,

Reneta Nikolova stated, exclusively for the ZIUA daily, that in Bulgaria all

the people who collaborated with the communist secret police and with other

special services were not independent at the beginning of the process of

reconstructing the democratic civic society in her country. The explanation

is simple, according to Nikolova, since their former superiors managed to

keep them into a kind of special network, by making them afraid of telling

the truth about the activities they had performed in the past. In addition

to that, to reveal nothing from the past, all these individuals are ready to

compromise, at a political, economic and moral level. They also tend to

become unpredictable, as they have to keep on obeying the orders of their

former chiefs. It is also true the latter oppose the various changes and

they try to prevent Bulgaria's accession to the EU. Nikolova added this

situation was present in the journalistic field as well and especially in

the fight against corruption. She also pointed out the experience of the

former secret services to transfer its power from the political to the

economical area was, in many cases, in relationship with activities on the

verge of the legality and that journalists should investigate upon and make

them public, instead of hiding them. Definitely, she concluded, this cannot

be done by journalists who collaborated with the former communist secret

services.
