On the 3 and 4 of May 2010 there were organized a Press-conference and a Seminar as part of the carried out by the “Club Journalists against Corruption” Project – “OLAF – FACING THE EUROPEAN CITIZENS. THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR THE PREVENTION OF FRAUD AND THE MISUSE OF EUROPEAN FUNDS AN INTEGRATED INFORMATION CAMPAIGN”, co-financed by the European Commission (OLAF) under the Hercule II-2009 Programme. The project was implemented by the ‘Club – Journalists against Corruption’ in partnerships with the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria, the Ministry of Interior, the Czech Customs Administration, the Prosecutor’s Office of Slovakia, the Italian Guardia di Finanza and the German ZKA.
At the opening, Mr. Tzvetan Tzvetanov – Vice Prime-Minister and Minister of the Interior greeted Mrs. Reneta Nikolova – Chair of the Board of the ‘Club Journalists against Corruption’ and the participants in the Seminar and emphasized that the protection of the financial interests of the European communities is a priority of the present Bulgarian government, which expresses its full support for the transparent, lawful and efficient management of the EU funds and the national co-financing. Minister Tzvetanov declared his firm belief that the Government and the Bulgarian authorities do their utmost the cooperation with OLAF to be extended and strengthened and that our country will also continue to render complete cooperation to the European Anti-Fraud Office henceforth.
During the Press-conference, in which took part Mr. Valeri Parvanov – Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Bulgaria, was also shown the documentary film of journalist Reneta Nikolova and cameramen Kaloyan Bojilov and Dimitar Skobelev – “OLAF – Facing the European Citizens” Part II. The shooting of the unique for Bulgaria film was made in three countries – Italy, Slovakia and Belgium, and the team shot from helicopters, cutters and airplanes and shows the experience of the specialized financial police of Italy, Guardia di Finanza, of the specialized Prosecutor’s Office and Court in Slovakia, as well as OLAF significance and coordinating role in the international cooperation. The Head of the Unit OLAF Investigations A3 - “Direct Expenditure and External Aid”, Directorate A Investigations & Operations I, Mr. Alessandro Buttice and Mr. Freddy Dezeure - DG INFSO, Head of Unit 02 “External Audit” both arrived from Brussels especially for the premiere of the film. The documentary will be shown in Brussels in the Berliamon Building of the European Commission on Europe’s Open Day on May 8 2010.
Main discussion topic during the Seminar was the role of the specialized services and of the judicial authorities in the successful fight against frauds and the misuses of the European funds and corruption. Mrs. Sonya Klisarska – Director of the AFCOS Directorate at the Ministry of the Interior, Mrs Dagmar Papcunova – General Prosecutor’s Office of the Slovak Republic and member of OAFCN, Mr. Boiko Kostov – AFCOS, Manager of the “Operative Cooperation” Directorate, Mr. Gian Luca Berruti – Guardia di Finanza of Italia, Mr. Jiri Bartak – Spokesman of the Czech Customs, procurators and officials of the MOI all highlighted their work in this area.
The participants in the Press-conference and Seminar expressed their satisfaction with the successful results of the work under the Project “OLAF – FACING THE EUROPEAN CITIZENS. THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR THE PREVENTION OF FRAUD AND THE MISUSE OF EUROPEAN FUNDS The materials from the media campaign on the Project will be presented to the information networks of the partners from Europe and will be available to be used at different international events
